Somalis Living Near Al-Shabaab Bases in HirShabelle Told to Leave as Airstrikes Continue

Somalia’s Minister of Defence, Abdikadir Mohamed Nur, has issued a public warning regarding the ongoing airstrikes targeting Al-Shabaab bases in HirShabelle State, which have continued for the fifth consecutive day.

The minister emphasized the importance of public awareness and safety, urging residents near Al-Shabaab strongholds to remain vigilant and avoid areas that could be targeted in the operations.

The airstrikes are part of a broader military offensive against Al-Shabab, which has been active in central and southern Somalia. The operations aim to dismantle the group’s infrastructure and reduce its operational capabilities.

The strikes are concentrated in HirShabelle State, a region where Al-Shabab has maintained significant influence. The group has used this area for planning attacks and as a logistical hub.

Nur’s warning highlights the risks to civilians living near Al-Shabab bases, as these locations are likely to be targeted. The government is working to minimize collateral damage while ensuring the effectiveness of the operations.

The airstrikes are conducted with the support of international partners, including the United States and Turkey, which have provided drone and air support to Somali forces.

The offensive is part of Somalia’s broader strategy to weaken Al-Shabab’s hold on the country, particularly in its southern strongholds, and to stabilize regions previously under the group’s control.

The current phase of operations follows earlier successes in central Somalia, where Somali forces, supported by local militias and international partners, recaptured significant territories from Al-Shabab.

However, the campaign has faced challenges, including setbacks in consolidating gains and delays in launching the second phase of the offensive, dubbed “Operation Black Lion”.

The minister’s warning underscores the government’s commitment to both military success and civilian safety, as it seeks to balance the urgency of defeating Al-Shabab with the need to protect vulnerable populations.
