Somali’s Special Envoy for Drought Response Ready to Give up His Parliamentary Seat

Abdirahman Abdishakur, Somalia’s Special Envoy for Drought Response, says that he is ready to give up his parliamentary seat.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appointed Abdishakur the country’s Special Envoy for Drought Response a few days ago.

Abdishakur is also a legislator in the House of the People (Lower House).

He has been the leader of the Wadajir Party and vied in the last presidential elections held in Mogadishu on May 15, 2022.

There had been calls for him to quit his parliamentary seat to take up the presidential appointment.

On June 5, he gave the clearest indication of his willingness to continue serving Somalis as the Special Envoy for Drought Response.

In an interview with BBC Somali Service, Abdishakur said that he has no problem quitting parliament to coordinate humanitarian efforts in the country.

Several people have died because of the ongoing drought in Somalia.

Many herders have suffered extensive losses too as their animals die due to lack of fodder and water.
