SOMWA Boosts Safety Training for Female Journalists in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali Women Journalists Association (SOMWA) on Tuesday launched a two-day safety training program in Mogadishu aimed at empowering female journalists with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the growing challenges of their profession.

With a special focus on physical security, digital safety, and psychosocial support, the initiative brought together dozens of women reporters, media practitioners, and key representatives from Somalia’s federal government.

The training, supported by the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), comes amid increasing threats and pressure faced by female journalists in Somalia, particularly those reporting from conflict zones or covering politically sensitive issues.

“SOMWA is committed to ensuring the safety and mental well-being of Somali women in media, who continue to work under extremely difficult conditions,” said a representative from the organization during the opening session.

Participants engaged in hands-on workshops, scenario-based training, and peer support sessions aimed at improving risk assessment skills, enhancing online security practices, and addressing trauma and stress management.

Federal officials praised the initiative as a critical step toward safeguarding press freedom and empowering women in journalism, who often face both gender-based violence and professional intimidation.

This training marks another milestone in SOMWA’s ongoing campaign to create a safer and more equitable media landscape in Somalia, especially as the country grapples with security challenges and transitions toward democratic governance.
