The son of Somali immigrants has made history by defeating a longtime incumbent in Tuesday’s Democratic Party primaries.
Omar Fateh defeated Jeff Hayden in the race for the Minnesota State Senate.
Consequently, he will be carrying the Democratic flag in November’s elections.
Fateh, a 30-year old who works for the University of Minnesota as a business-systems analyst, beat the incumbent by 1,600 votes, which is equivalent to 9 percentage points.
His win is made even more special by the fact that he was involved in one of the most hotly contested primaries.
Fateh will be facing Republican Party’s Bruce Lundeen for the District 62 ticket in November.
Hayden has already conceded defeat and pledged to support Fateh in November’s race. He also congratulated the people of Minnesota for the huge voter turnout.
