Lower Shabelle is experiencing intensive military operations for the second week running. The country’s Special Forces just announced that they captured a top Al-Shabaab leader. It is the fourth time the troops are arresting one of the extremist group’s senior commanders.
This is great news for a country that has known nothing but chaos, political instability, clan wars, and violent conflicts for decades. The government has been absent thus making it impossible to maintain law and order.
The country’s Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism released a statement revealing that troops from Danab Special Forces raided the outskirts of Wanlaweyn in Southern Somalia. During the raid, they captured a leading senior commander of the terror group.
The AFRICOM-trained 1st Danab Advanced Infantry Battalion conducted the raid. It is the first troop that AFRICOM both trained and commissioned to help keep the country stable and take back key towns that the government had lost to Al-Shabaab.
Ibrahim Mohamed Rooble, the captured militant, had been in charge of collecting taxes on behalf of Al-Shabaab in the Lower Shabelle Region. Additionally, he also played the role of Amniyat, which means he was an intelligence officer for the Al-Qaeda linked group.
