Special Presidential Envoy for Drought Response Says Somalia Averted Famine in October

Abdirahman Abdishakur, the Special Presidential Envoy for Drought Response, says that Somalia has averted the famine it was due to face in October.

Somalia has been facing drought for the last few years.

The problem grew worse and experts suspected that the East African nation would finally transition from drought to famine.

However, that changed due to intervention from various parties.

According to Abdishakur,  swift response from donor countries and the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) proved effective in preventing famine.

He also commended the swift response from United Nations agencies as well as international and local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) for averting famine.

Nevertheless, he appealed to them not to relent until the situation returns to normal.
