The SSC-Khaatumo administration has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre during his upcoming visit to Las Anod, despite escalating tensions following warnings from Somaliland officials.
SSC-Khaatumo’s Minister of Information, Najib Barkhadle Warsame, rejected claims by Somaliland’s Information Minister, Ahmed Yasin Sheikh Ali Ayaanle, who accused the Somali federal government of inciting conflict by arranging the high-profile trip to the disputed region.
“The minister’s statement is unfounded and likely stems from a lack of accurate information,” said Minister Najib. “Had we any doubt—even 1%—about our territorial control, we would not have extended the invitation. SSC-Khaatumo is fully prepared to guarantee the Prime Minister’s security.”
He emphasized that SSC-Khaatumo forces are well-equipped and ready to host all federal leaders, dismissing Ayaanle’s remarks as ignorant of the region’s military readiness.
Earlier this week, Somaliland’s Information Minister condemned the planned visit as a “deliberate provocation” and an attempt to impose Somalia’s internal disputes onto Somaliland. He reiterated Las Anod’s status as Somaliland territory and warned of potential repercussions if the trip proceeds.
In response, Minister Najib accused Somaliland of fueling instability in the Horn of Africa, holding it accountable for any escalation resulting from its rhetoric or actions.
Las Anod has been under SSC-Khaatumo’s administration since early 2023, when a popular uprising ousted Somaliland forces. Since then, the region has aligned itself with Somalia’s federal government and is seeking formal recognition as a federal member state.
Prime Minister Barre’s visit is seen as a strong gesture of Mogadishu’s support for SSC-Khaatumo, even as the region remains contested by both Somaliland and Puntland.
