SSC-Khaatumo Statehood Meeting Opens in Las Anod

Las Anod, Somalia – A historic meeting to finalize the completion of SSC-Khaatumo’s statehood officially opened in Las Anod, marking a major milestone in the region’s political and administrative reorganization.

The gathering brought together top officials from Somalia’s federal government and SSC-Khaatumo leadership. Among the attendees were the Second Deputy Speaker of the Somali Parliament, the federal Minister of Interior, and other senior federal and regional government representatives. Traditional elders, civil society members, and community leaders from the SSC-Khaatumo region also took part in the forum.

The multi-day meeting aims to formalize SSC-Khaatumo’s political status within Somalia’s federal framework, a move widely seen as crucial for stability and governance in the Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn regions. Discussions will focus on the structure of the state administration, reconciliation efforts, and service delivery in areas recovered from conflict.

Federal officials expressed strong support for SSC-Khaatumo’s bid to be fully recognized as a federal member state. In his opening remarks, the Second Deputy Speaker reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusivity and respect for the will of the people in federally administered areas.

The meeting follows months of relative stability in Las Anod after local forces pushed back Somaliland authorities and reclaimed control. Since then, SSC-Khaatumo leaders and elders have been organizing transitional governance structures with grassroots backing.

Stakeholders at the conference are expected to adopt resolutions on governance, security coordination, and development, laying the groundwork for SSC-Khaatumo’s integration into Somalia’s federal system.

Observers say the outcome of this meeting could significantly influence the political landscape in northern Somalia and strengthen the federal government’s legitimacy in contested regions.
