Starlink Expansion in Somalia to Boost Connectivity and Growth

Mogadishu, Somalia — Somalia has welcomed a major digital leap forward as Starlink, the satellite internet division of SpaceX, embarks on a significant initiative to expand high-speed internet connectivity across the country.

Ambassador Dahir Hassan praised the move as a vital step in bridging the digital divide, especially in underserved rural and coastal communities.

“Bridging the digital divide is essential for fostering economic growth, improving education, and driving innovation. Rural and coastal communities will greatly benefit from this effort,” he stated.

The expansion of Starlink’s services is expected to revolutionize internet access in regions historically left behind due to poor infrastructure and limited investment. With its network of low-Earth orbit satellites, Starlink provides reliable and fast internet even in remote or conflict-affected areas, which aligns with Somalia’s digital transformation goals.

This development comes as the Somali government continues to prioritize digital infrastructure as part of its national development strategy. Officials see connectivity not only as a driver of education and innovation but also as a tool for enhancing public service delivery, economic inclusivity, and security.

Somalia joins a growing number of African nations turning to satellite internet to leapfrog traditional telecom limitations and deliver fast, reliable internet to citizens across vast terrains.

No timeline has been announced for full rollout, but preliminary discussions between Starlink representatives and Somali authorities signal mutual commitment to ensuring affordable and accessible internet countrywide.
