Swan Briefed on the State of Education in Somalia

James Swan, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia (SRSG), was recently briefed on the state of education in Somalia during his visit to the Ministry of Education headquarters in Mogadishu.

SRSG Swan received the briefing from a team led by education minister Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir.

Afterward, Swan emphasized the crucial role of education in fostering peace and stability in the country. He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve educational access and quality despite significant challenges such as resource shortages and the impact of prolonged conflict on the education system.

Examples of such efforts include initiatives by the UN and other international partners to support educational programs, provide necessary resources like textbooks and learning materials, and enhance teacher training.

Swan’s engagement reflects the international community’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s educational development as a cornerstone for the nation’s long-term stability and growth.

Discussions between Abdulkadir and Swan also touched on the development projects by the UN in Somalia.
