Sweden Jails 4 Men for Their Involvement in Terrorist Activities in Somalia

A Swedish court has sentenced four men to prison for their involvement with the Islamic State (IS) in Somalia.

The group includes two brothers, Elias and Rasmus Johansson, who converted to Islam during their teenage years.

The court dismissed charges related to plotting terrorist attacks due to insufficient evidence.

One of the convicted individuals, a 63-year-old imam named Elyas Hakamali, was accused of radicalizing youth.

The men were arrested in March 2024 during a raid on a mosque in Tyresö, a suburb of Stockholm, following surveillance that revealed suspicious activities.

In a related development, a Swedish court recently sentenced a 22-year-old man to three years and three months in prison for joining IS.

This marked the first conviction under new legislation adopted in 2023 that criminalizes participation in a terrorist organization.

The individual was also found guilty of financing terrorism and making multiple trips to Somalia for terrorist purposes.

These cases reflect Sweden’s ongoing efforts to strengthen anti-terrorism laws and address the involvement of its citizens in extremist activities abroad.
