Taiwan has made known plans to establish a military base in Somaliland, as part of the second-phase of agreement between the two nations to renew diplomatic ties.
On July 1, Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that his government and that of Somaliland planned to set up representative offices in each other’s territory.
Wu said that the two nations had been negotiating since late 2019.
In February 2020, the two countries signed a treaty when Yasin Haji Mohamoud, Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited Taipei.
While in Taipei, Mohamoud met President Tsai Ing Ing-wen of Taiwan.
Consequently, the Taiwanese government proceeded to establish its representative office in Hargeisa recently.
However, now Taiwan authorities have announced plans to establish a military base in the Horn of Africa nation as soon as possible.
Furthermore, Wu said that his government recognized Somaliland as a “true democratic nation in the continent” and an “independent African nation.”
