Taiwan Slams China and Somalia for Criticizing the Representative Office in Somaliland

On Thursday, the government of Taiwan, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, slammed both China and Somalia for criticizing its decision to open a diplomatic office in Somaliland.

On Monday August 17, Taiwan fulfilled its promise to establish strong diplomatic relations with Somaliland by opening its Representative Office in the East African nation.

Afterward, China and Somalia governments took a swipe at Taiwan and Somaliland for that.

On August 20, though, Taiwan’s spokesperson for the foreign affairs ministry, Joanne Ou, said China has no right to comment on her country’s activities.

She said that China had never ruled Taiwan for even “a single day.”

Further, she criticized the Federal Government of Somalia for talking about “one Somalia” when condemning Taiwan’s relations with Somaliland.

Ou said the phrase “one Somalia” is eerily similar to the “one China principle” that Beijing raises when speaking of Taiwan as part of China’s territory.

She reminded the two nations that Taiwan is free to establish diplomatic relations with any other country around the world. Ou said Taiwan would continue doing that.
