Taiwan to Deploy Representative to Somalia by End of August

Taiwan will send its Representative to Somaliland by the end of August 2020, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.

Taiwan’s foreign affairs ministry made this announcement amidst reports that China is sending its diplomatic delegation to the East African nation.

On July 1, Taiwan said that it would be setting up diplomatic relations with the nation that broke away from Somalia in 1991.

On its part, Somaliland announced a similar move.

Further, the two nations promised to set up diplomatic offices fully staffed with representatives in each other’s territories.

Reports indicate that President Muse Bihi Abdi has urged his close confidants to look into the likelihood of the two countries “mutually recognizing” each other.

Somaliland’s quest for international recognition has been made more difficult because of intense resistance from Mogadishu.

Taiwan has also met stiff resistance from Beijing as it seeks to enjoy increased recognition internationally as an independent nation.

Qin Jian, China’s Ambassador to Somalia, has been in Hargeisa since Sunday to meet President Bihi but that meeting is yet to take place.
