Ten Militants Killed in a Security Operation in Northern Somalia

On Thursday, security forces carried out a military operation in northern Somalia, which killed 10 militants.

Abdul Rahman Mohamed Jama, Puntland’s Police Commander in Charge of Operations, said security forces engaged the militants in a fierce gunfight on August 20.

He said the fight lasted several hours.

At the end, security forces from Puntland killed 10 militants. Jama also mentioned that two soldiers died in the gun battle while one was injured.

According to local eyewitnesses, the fight took place in Galgala.

Residents said they heard loud sounds of mortars and gunshot exchanges between the two warring sides.

Over the years, the mountains around Galgala provided Al-Shabaab and Islamic State extremists with perfect hideouts from which to launch several attacks against security forces in Puntland.
