Abdirashid Janan, Jubaland’s former Security Minister, escaped from custody in Mogadishu to Kenya’s Mandera Town.
His presence in the northeastern county is the cause of simmering tensions in the area.
Somali National Army has been moving towards the Kenya-Somalia border. A showdown with forces loyal to the fugitive minister looms large.
Government troops plan to attack the Mandera hotel where Janan stays.
Janan escaped from custody on January 28, 2020. The Federal Government of Somali held him a Mogadishu prison since August 31, 2019.
His escape and eventual hiding in Kenya has triggered a round of condemnation from the FGS and Amnesty International who says he should be repatriated to Somalia to appear in court.
