Thirty-two Somali migrants arrived back home safely from Libya where they have been stranded and helpless.
A report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) shows that the organization facilitated the safe return of the 32 Somalis in November 2021.
IOM did this through its programme known as the Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR).
Federico Soda, IOM’s Chief of Mission in Libya, stated that the North African nation currently has around 6,000 migrants from Somalia.
Soda stated that many of the migrants remain stranded in Libya.
Nevertheless, the migrants have a lifeline in the form of the VHR programme, which they can use to return home and rebuild their lives.
Between November 18-23, 10 Somalis returned to Mogadishu while another 22 arrived in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland.
IOM Somalia staff received the returnees before providing them with post-arrival assistance.
This assistance was in the form of medical and psychosocial support as well as counseling.
The VHR programme receives funding from the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration Fund.
