Top US Army Commander Visits Kenya ahead of Planned Withdrawal of Troops from Somalia

A senior United States army commander has traveled to Kenya on an official visit ahead of planned withdrawal of troops from Somalia.

General Stephen Townsend is in Nairobi for his second visit in the last two months.

Townsend is the head of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), which has a strong presence in Somalia.

AFRICOM has played a crucial role in supporting the fight against Al-Shabaab and other terrorist groups in Somalia.

It has worked closely with Somali National Army (SNA) and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) soldiers.

Currently, the United States has close to 700 troops in Somalia.

President Donald Trump has ordered his security advisors to withdraw all the 700 troops from the Horn of Africa nation.
