The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has commended the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation of Somalia for successfully linking all its public services to the National Identification System.
This move comes in compliance with a directive issued by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre aimed at improving governance, security, and service delivery across government institutions.
According to NIRA, the integration ensures that individuals seeking to access key services under the ministry must now verify their identity through the National ID system.
This includes shareholders of transport companies, applicants for driver’s licenses or renewals, individuals registering vehicle ownership changes, and those applying for various types of vehicle permits.
Officials say the move will enhance transparency, reduce fraud, and improve accountability in Somalia’s growing transport sector. It also marks a significant step in the government’s broader plan to institutionalise digital identity across all ministries and agencies.
NIRA praised the ministry for taking swift action to align with national policy and encouraged other sectors to follow suit in linking their services with the National ID platform.
