Turkey Announces Plans to Build a US$1 Billion Spaceport in Somalia

Plans by the government of Turkey to build a spaceport worth US$1 billion in Somalia have now been revealed.

Recently, the Turkish government revealed that it intends to make a soft landing on the moon by 2028.

For this to happen, however, Turkey would need to put up a rocket launching site in the East African nation.

These plans have the backing of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkey intends to make a hard landing on the moon using a hybrid rocket that is produced and assembled locally by 2023.

The soft landing would then follow in 2028.

Nevertheless, there have been concerns whether the Turkish government has enough funds to finance such lofty ambitions.

The Turkish Space Agency (TUA) operates with an annual budget of roughly around US$40 million, which is insufficient for such plans.
