Turkey to Ship COVID-19 Medical Supplies to Somalia

Turkey has announced that it plans to ship medical supplies to Somalia to help the East African country in its fight against COVID-19.

The pandemic continues to ravage all facets of life in Somalia. It has stagnated the economy while destroying whatever was left of the country’s healthcare system.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 has hit Somalia the hardest in the region with the number of confirmed cases nearing 600.

On Friday, Turkey’s presidential spokesperson, Ibrahim Kalin, tweeted that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has issued instructions for shipping tons of medical supplies to Somalia.

Among the cargo will be test kits, masks, overalls and other types of equipment needed for fighting the virulent disease.

“Somalia and the whole of Africa can count on the support of Turkey in all the calamities facing them,” added Kalin.

Erdogan first visited Somalia in 2011 when the Horn of Africa nation had lost “tens of thousands” of its people to famine.
