Turkish and Qatari Ambassadors Pledge More Support After Visiting Beletweyne

Qatari and Turkish ambassadors visited Beletweyne, which has seen the worst of the floods that continue to ravage this part of the country. The tour, during which the diplomats pledged to ease the suffering inflicted upon the town, took place on Saturday. The ravaging floods have forced many residents out of their homes.

The Qatari diplomat, Ambassador Hassan Bin Hamza Hashem, joined his Turkish counterpart – Ambassador Mehmet Yilmaz, on tour. They saw firsthand the devastation that the flood has visited upon the town and the ongoing relief efforts.

Later, they held a meeting with President Mohamed Ware of the HirShabelle State, who kept them abreast of the progress of the relief efforts.

They pledged to send in more relief supplies to bolster the humanitarian efforts by the government and humanitarian agencies led by the UN.

The Qatari ambassador donated 44 metric tons of humanitarian aid on Thursday.

According to the United Nations, the floods displaced roughly a quarter of a million individuals in various parts of the country.

Beletweyne has suffered the most damage from the floods. Eighty-five percent of the town is now under floodwater, as per reports by OCHA, a UN humanitarian agency.
