The Turkish Ministry of Defence has released new footage showcasing its continued support for Somalia’s security forces, featuring Turkish military instructors conducting specialised training for members of the elite Gorgor unit in Mogadishu.
The clips show Somali officers and soldiers undergoing advanced tactical drills under the supervision of Turkish trainers, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance operational readiness and combat capabilities within the Somali National Army (SNA). The training programme — part of a long-standing defence cooperation agreement between the two nations — is designed to equip Somalia’s most capable units with skills in infantry manoeuvres, urban warfare, and counter-terrorism operations.
Türkiye has emerged as one of Somalia’s most committed security partners over the past decade. It operates one of its largest overseas military bases in Mogadishu and has trained thousands of Somali troops, many of whom now form the backbone of offensives against Al-Shabaab and other armed groups.
Somali defence officials have consistently praised Ankara’s support, crediting it with improving discipline, coordination, and professionalism within the armed forces. Analysts say the Gorgor unit, in particular, has played a decisive role in several key operations across the country.
The renewed visibility of the training underscores Türkiye’s determination to deepen its strategic footprint in the Horn of Africa, even as international missions transition out of the country. For Somalia, the partnership remains crucial as it continues to pursue stability amid persistent security threats.
