Two Cuban doctors who were kidnapped by Al-Shabaab from their workstations in Kenya have been set free.
The doctors were dramatically abducted by Al-Shabaab 18 months ago.
Since then, information regarding the exact locations where they were being held has remained scanty.
Landy Rodriguez and Assel Herrera, a surgeon and general medicine specialist respectively, were abducted on April 12, 2019.
They were in Kenya as part of a team providing medical services following an agreement between the government of the East African and that of Cuba.
At the time of their abduction, the two were in a car traveling in Mandera County.
According to insiders, Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) not only tracked the doctors’ whereabouts but also negotiated their release from Al-Shabaab.
Currently, Rodriguez and Herrera remain under the custody of NISA.
