Two new minerals have been discovered in Somalia from a meteorite that recently fell in the country.
Recently, a 15-ton meteorite was discovered in Somalia. The meteorite was the ninth largest ever to be found anywhere on earth.
Thereafter, two unknown minerals were found in a 70g slice of the meteorite.
The minerals were then sent to the University of Alberta for classification.
Reports from the University now indicate that a third mineral from that slice is now under consideration.
Scientists have named the two minerals. One is elaliite and the other is elkinstantonite.
The meteorite from whence the two – and possibly three – minerals came was discovered at El Ali, a town in Somalia’s Hiiraan region.
