Mogadishu – U.S. forces conducted an airstrike over the weekend against the al Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab militant group in Somalia, according to a statement from U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).
The strike targeted an area approximately 40 miles northwest of Kismayo, a known hotspot for Al-Shabaab activity.
AFRICOM said the operation was aimed at disrupting the group’s ability to plan and execute attacks, noting that Al-Shabaab “has proven both its will and capability to attack U.S. forces.”
Specific details regarding the units involved and military assets used in the operation were not disclosed in order to maintain operational security.
The strike underscores the continued threat posed by Al-Shabaab and the ongoing U.S. commitment to counterterrorism efforts in the region.
