Uganda Defeats Somalia 2-0 in World Cup Qualifier in Kampala

Kampala, Uganda — Uganda secured a significant 2-0 home victory over Somalia at the Mandela National Stadium on Monday night, keeping their hopes alive for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ugandan side wasted no time asserting control. Allan Okello converted an early penalty in the sixth minute after Abdulle Abdullani fouled Azizi Kayondo inside the box. Later in the first half, Jude Ssemugabi doubled the lead in the 38th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball from Somalia’s keeper to slot home with composure.

Despite an improved showing from Somalia after the break, Uganda remained defensively solid. Goalkeeper Jamal Magoola marshalled the backline effectively, ensuring the visitors could not find a way back into the contest.

Uganda head coach Paul Put applauded his squad’s performance, emphasizing both their clinical finishing and defensive discipline. He noted that the players must remain focused with two more group games to come in October. Team captain Khalid Aucho also celebrated the back-to-back wins, highlighting the six goals scored across two matches as evidence of the team’s growing confidence.

The result leaves Uganda in second place in Group G, level on points with Mozambique but still trailing leaders Algeria by four points. Guinea and Botswana remain in the middle of the standings, while Somalia sits at the bottom with only a single point after eight games, effectively ending their qualification hopes.

Looking ahead, Uganda faces two crucial away fixtures next month against Botswana and Algeria. Victories in those matches could keep them in contention for direct qualification or at least secure a place in the inter-confederation playoff. Somalia, meanwhile, will complete their remaining matches with pride as the only goal left to play for.
