Uganda Sends the 7th UN Guard Unit to Somalia

Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu, the Commander of the Land Forces of Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) has flagged off the 7th United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU) to Somalia.

UNGU VII comprises 600 peacekeeping soldiers.

Lt. Col. Francis Odikiro was announced as the Commander in charge of the new force that joins the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops.

The soldiers were flagged off to begin their journey to Somalia at the UPDF Peace Support Operations and Training Center (PSO-TC), which is in Singo, Nakaseke District.

While addressing the officers, Lt. Gen. Elwelu reminded them of the stellar job their predecessors had performed in Somalia.

He encouraged them to maintain high standards through unmatched discipline, selfless service, and by performing their tasks exceptionally well.

Further, he cautioned them against practices that could add Uganda’s UNGU in Somalia to the list of UN missions in the country with a record of violations.
