Ugandan Government Denies Reports its AMISOM Contingent Killed 189 Extremists in Somalia

Ugandan government has denied reports trending on social media that its African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) contingent killed 189 extremists.

On January 22, it was reported that Ugandan People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) had killed 189 Al-Shabaab extremists.

Apparently, the extremists were killed in Lower Shabelle when AMISOM’s Ugandan contingent carried out a military operation in the region.

On Wednesday, a communiqué from Uganda termed such reports “falsehoods.”

Uganda issued a statement from its United Nations mission in New York.

Adonia Ayebare, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said that there was no truth to these stories.

Ayebare denied the reports indicating that UPDF soldiers raided Al-Shabaab hideouts in different areas in Lower Shabelle.

Uganda boasts of a force of over 4,500 soldiers serving under AMISOM.
