Ugandan Troops Will Stay in Somalia as AMISOM Transitions to ATMIS

Ugandan troops will stay in Somalia even as African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) transitions to African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

Brigadier Felix Kulayigye, a spokesperson for the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) AMISOM contingent, confirmed this on March 12.

According to Brig. Kulayigye, UPDF troops would continue serving as part of AMISOM.

He confirmed that there would be a significant reduction in the number of AMISOM troops in Somalia.

Nevertheless, this would not lead to a withdrawal of Ugandan forces from Somalia.

For the next two years, ATMIS is responsible for stabilizing Somalia.

AMISOM forces in the East African nation are currently planning to hand over security roles to Somali troops.
