UK and UN Condemns Tuesday’s Assassination Attempt Against President Mohamud in Mogadishu

The United Kingdom has condemned Tuesday’s attack on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s convoy in Mogadishu, extending condolences to the victims and reaffirming its support for Somalia’s fight against violent extremism.

On March 18, 2025, a roadside bomb exploded near Somalia’s presidential palace targeting President Mohamud’s convoy as he was en route to the main airport before traveling to HirShabelle regional state.

The President was unharmed, but witnesses reported at least three fatalities at the scene. The militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, which the Somali Information Ministry condemned as a “cowardly act of desperation.”

The United Nations also condemned the attack, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reaffirming support for Somalia’s efforts towards peace and stability.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges Somalia faces from Al-Shabaab, despite intensified military operations by government forces and African Union peacekeepers. The international community continues to support Somalia in its efforts to combat terrorism and achieve lasting peace.
