Mogadishu, Somalia – Speaking at the 2025 Chevening Engagement Event in Mogadishu on Tuesday, British Ambassador to Somalia, Charles King, underscored the vital role of partnership in driving the success of the UK’s flagship global scholarship programme in the country.
Since its inception in 1985, the Chevening programme has enabled over 100 Somalis to join its international network of leaders, innovators, and change-makers. Amb. King noted that this achievement reflects the UK’s enduring commitment to investing in Somalia’s future through education, leadership development, and international collaboration.
“The achievements of Chevening alumni in Somalia are a testament to the power of partnerships,” Amb. King said, praising the contributions of Somali scholars who have returned to play leading roles in government, business, and civil society.
The event brought together past and present Chevening scholars, government officials, and development partners to celebrate the impact of the programme and explore opportunities for expanding its reach. The UK embassy reaffirmed its intention to continue supporting talented Somalis with the skills and networks needed to drive progress at home and on the global stage.
