Puntland, Somalia – The United Kingdom has commended the Puntland State authorities for their recent advances in the fight against ISIS-Somalia militants entrenched in the Al-Miskaad mountains.
British Ambassador to Somalia, Charles King, praised what he described as “significant progress” by Puntland’s security forces in weakening the extremist group, which has used the rugged terrain as a stronghold for years. He reaffirmed London’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Puntland and the wider Federal Government of Somalia in counterterrorism efforts.
The Ambassador noted that the UK is prepared to expand its support through technical expertise, capacity-building programs, and assistance in post-conflict stabilization.
“Our goal is not only to help defeat violent extremism but also to ensure that communities in liberated areas are able to rebuild and access vital services,” Amb. King emphasized.
Security operations in the Al-Miskaad range have intensified in recent months, with Puntland forces reportedly driving militants out of key positions and disrupting their recruitment networks. Local officials say these gains are critical in restoring stability and paving the way for governance and development in previously insecure areas.
The UK has been a longstanding partner to Somalia, providing aid for security, governance reforms, and humanitarian needs. Analysts view London’s renewed support for Puntland as a signal of international confidence in Somali-led operations against extremist groups, even as the country continues to grapple with the wider challenge posed by Al-Shabaab.
