Mogadishu, Somalia – The United Kingdom has praised the Somali National Army (SNA) and African Union forces for their recent operational advances against the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab group, calling the gains a vital step in Somalia’s ongoing fight to restore peace and stability.
In a media interview in Mogadishu, British Ambassador to Somalia, Charles King, reaffirmed London’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s security sector and wider state-building agenda. He noted that the progress achieved on the battlefield underscores the resilience of Somali forces and the importance of international partnerships.
“These operational successes are not only military victories but also critical milestones for Somalia’s future. The United Kingdom remains firmly committed to helping Somalia strengthen its security institutions, combat terrorism, and build stability for its people,” said Amb. King.
The Somali National Army, backed by African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) troops, has in recent months intensified offensives in central and southern regions. These operations have targeted Al-Shabaab strongholds, disrupting militant networks and reclaiming territory.
Amb. King emphasized that the UK’s support goes beyond military cooperation, pointing to ongoing investments in governance, humanitarian aid, and economic recovery.
“Our assistance is about ensuring Somalia can stand on its own, with security forces that are accountable, professional, and trusted by citizens,” he added.
Somalia continues to face security challenges as Al-Shabaab maintains the capacity to launch high-profile attacks, particularly in Mogadishu and other urban centers. However, officials in Mogadishu say recent offensives have significantly weakened the group’s logistical and financial networks.
The UK is among Somalia’s key international partners, providing training, funding, and advisory support to the Somali government. Its endorsement of recent counter-terrorism gains comes at a time when the country is preparing for the transition from ATMIS to the new African Union Support and Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM) in the coming months.
