UK to Continue Supporting Press Freedom in Somalia

The United Kingdom has promised to continue fighting for and supporting press freedom in Somalia.

Kate Foster, the UK Ambassador to Somalia, announced this on August 7 during a virtual meeting with local journalists.

Ambasasdor Foster hosted a virtual roundtable that featured journalists, activists, and participants from Somalia’s media unions.

She also expressed interest in learning more about their work including the challenges and opportunities they encounter.

The envoy told the participants that the UK would continue supporting the agitation for press freedom while leading the call for safety of journalists.

For years, Somalia has been one of the unsafest places for journalists.

Hundreds of Somali journalists have been arrested, arraigned in court, or lost their lives and suffered irreparable damages from authorities.
