The United Kingdom has said that it would recognize Somaliland only on one condition.
Vicky Ford, the Minister for Africa at the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office stated this on November 18.
She was responding to a letter by Danny Kruger, the Member of Parliament (MP).
MP Kruger had written the letter on September 17.
In her response, Ford said that the UK would only recognize Somaliland’s statehood if Somalia does the same.
Somalia has continuously stated that Somaliland is part of its territory.
Somaliland and Somalia were once one state. However, Somaliland broke free in the early 1990s when the Civil War broke out.
Since then, Somaliland has sought international recognition without much success.
Somalia’s relations with other countries around the world make it much harder for Somaliland to earn meaningful recognition.
