UK Urges Somalia and Somaliland to Intensify Dialogue for Progress

Mogadishu, Somalia – The United Kingdom has called on Somalia’s Federal Government and the Somaliland administration to strengthen dialogue and communication as a constructive path toward resolving outstanding matters and fostering mutual understanding.

In an exclusive interview with a local media outlet in Mogadishu, UK Ambassador to Somalia, Charles King, emphasised that sustained engagement between the two sides is essential for making meaningful progress.

“The best way to address some issues that are currently under discussion is through open channels of dialogue,” Amb. King stated, underscoring London’s position that direct communication remains the most viable avenue for building trust and finding solutions.

The UK has historically played a supportive role in Somalia–Somaliland engagement, backing regional and international initiatives aimed at easing tensions and promoting stability in the Horn of Africa. While political differences between Mogadishu and Hargeisa remain unresolved, both sides have previously participated in internationally mediated talks, with varying degrees of success.

Amb. King’s remarks come amid renewed calls from Somali political analysts and civil society for revitalising dialogue, noting that regional stability, security cooperation, and economic growth are closely tied to the outcome of Somalia–Somaliland relations.

The UK’s latest statement signals a continued diplomatic push by international partners to encourage peaceful negotiation over political disputes, with the aim of preventing further division and unlocking opportunities for development across the region.
