UN and Somalia Advance Security Transition Plans in Justice and Rule of Law Sectors

Mogadishu, Somalia – On Tuesday, 47 delegates from the United Nations and the Federal Government of Somalia gathered in Mogadishu to chart key priorities for the country’s ongoing security transition. The high-level workshop, part of the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia’s (UNTMIS) roadmap development process, concentrated on strengthening the rule of law, policing, corrections, and maritime security systems.

The session was jointly led by Ambassador Yusuf Garaad and Nasrin Khan, Head of UNTMIS’s Rule of Law and Security Institutions Group. Khan emphasized that the goal remains building a justice and security framework in Somalia that is resilient, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of its citizens.

Co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNTMIS, the meeting is part of broader national consultations aimed at finalizing the roadmap for the second phase of the Mission’s transition, scheduled to begin on 1 November 2025 and conclude on 31 October 2026. This process is aligned with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2753 and is intended to facilitate a responsible and structured handover of UNTMIS’s duties in Somalia’s security and justice sectors.
