UN Condemns the Killing of Somalia Humanitarian Workers by Al-Shabaab

United Nations in Somalia (UNSOM) has condemned the killing of Somali humanitarian workers by Al-Shabaab.

On Tuesday, October 27, Al-Shabaab militants reportedly killed two Somali humanitarian workers who are part of the ongoing polio immunization campaign.

UNSOM issued a press statement condemning the killings “strongly.”

The workers were part of a team involved in polio vaccination campaign, which was necessitated by the recent outbreak of the disease in the country.

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Ministry of Health, and World Health Organization (WHO) jointly organized the vaccination campaign.

UN said that the workers were providing a crucial service to the children.

Over 1.5 million children in Somalia are eligible for the vaccination. Mogadishu alone has 500,000 children aged below 5 years who need the vaccine.

UN has urged authorities in the country to conduct comprehensive investigations into the brutal murders to bring the perpetrators to book.

Adam Abdelmoula, UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, extended condolences to the families and friends of the bereaved.
