UN Demands Measures to Stop Conflict-Based Sexual Violence in Somalia

The United Nations has called for urgent measures to stop conflict-based sexual violence in the East African nation of Somalia.

James Swan, the UN Special Envoy to Somalia, made this announcement during the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict.

He called on leaders and communities in the Horn of African nation to collaborate with local and international partners to solve this problem permanently.

Swan said that victims and survivors of conflict-induced sexual violence need more attention from loved ones, friends, colleagues, neighbors, and leaders.

Conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) has been a huge problem in Somalia, which has endured decades of armed conflicts and a dysfunctional government.

Last year, Somalia recorded 744 rape cases. Out of that number, 241 were confirmed CRSV cases, which seem to be target more women and girls.
