UN Expects Parts of Somalia to Experience Famine before End of Year

The United Nations expects parts of Somalia to experience famine before the end of this year.

The latest UN report on the ongoing drought in Somalia says that “famine is at the door” of the East African nation.

Recently, Martin Griffiths visited Somalia and went to the place he called the “epicenter” of the ongoing drought and the ensuing humanitarian crisis.

Griffiths is the UN’s relief chief.

Thus far, the drought has forced more than 1 million Somalis in the country to abandon their homes in search of food, water, livelihood, and pasture.

Close to 30 percent of all children in Somalia have been diagnosed with acute malnutrition.

Griffiths said that Somalia used to obtain close to 90 percent of its wheat from both Russia and Ukraine, the two countries that are currently embroiled in a fierce war with each other.
