Lower Shabelle, Somalia – The United Nations has welcomed the recapture of Awdheegle, marking a significant victory in Somalia’s ongoing offensive against Al-Shabaab in the Lower Shabelle region.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the UN praised the joint forces spearheading Operation Silent Storm, noting that Awdheegle is the third and final strategic bridge town in the region to be retaken in recent weeks.
“We commend the collaboration between the Somali National Army, the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces and other international partners, and honour the sacrifices that they have made for the advancement of peace and stability in Somalia,” the UN said.
Strategic Gain in Lower Shabelle
Awdheegle, located along the Shabelle River, has long been considered a critical supply and transit hub for both security forces and insurgent groups. Its recovery follows similar offensives in key river crossing towns that have historically provided militants with revenue and mobility.
Operation Silent Storm, launched to secure trade routes and reinforce government control in southern Somalia, has seen intensified offensives backed by African Union troops and international partners.
Joint Effort Praised
The UN highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation in achieving security benchmarks, pointing specifically to the Somali National Army (SNA), the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), and support missions working under the African Union’s mandate.
Diplomats and officials say the operation strengthens the federal government’s presence in rural areas and sets conditions for local administration, humanitarian access and community stabilization.
Focus Shifts to Consolidation
With Awdheegle now under government control, attention turns to securing liberated areas and protecting civilians from potential retaliatory attacks. Security analysts warn that sustained cooperation and resources will be essential to prevent militants from regrouping.
UN officials say they remain committed to supporting Somali-led stabilization efforts and ensuring that recent gains translate into long-term peace and institutional governance.
The liberation of Awdheegle is being seen both as a tactical win and a symbolic boost to Somalia’s broader campaign to reclaim territory and restore state authority across conflict-affected regions.
