The Head of the UN Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has welcomed the decision by the Federal Government of Somalia to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate crimes against journalists in the country.
Last week, the Somali government, through the Attorney General, announced the appointment of the Special Prosecutor in response to a request made by journalists during a workshop held in 2019.
Bachelet termed the decision from the Office of the Attorney General “encouraging.” She released a statement urging all states, and not Somalia only, to “respect the right of their people to express their views openly and freely.”
