UN Inter-Agency Team Meets Somaliland Leaders over Hargeisa Market Fire Disaster

An inter-agency team from the United Nations was in Hargeisa to discuss the recent fire disaster at a local market.

The team held a series of meetings with top Somaliland government officers on Friday, April 7 in the region’s capital.

A few days ago, Waaheen Market in Hargeisa went up in flames.

The destructive inferno left more than 2,000 traders at the market without business premises.

Moreover, it injured 28 people while the Somaliland government estimates that the inferno left traders with losses amounting to more than $2 billion.

During the Friday meeting, the UN team called for cooperation between the different teams investigating and handling the fire disaster.

UN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting traders who need help in the short-term, medium-term, and long-term.
