The United Nations has launched an online call for humanitarian assistance to Somalia.
On August 9, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) launched the call for assistance.
The call for assistance comes in amid dwindling finances from donors.
Additionally, the call is designed to raise funding to enable Somalia to handle the humanitarian crisis it has been facing since 2020 when the country grappled with COVID-19 and locust infestation.
In addition to that, the East African nation also dealt with frequent floods that caused the deaths of dozens of locals and displaced hundreds of thousands more.
Towards the end of 2020, Somalia endured the wrath of Cyclone Gati, which had a direct impact on more than 120,000 people.
OCHA announced that lack of funding is at the worst it has ever been over the last six years.
In conjunction with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), the UN has appealed for US$1.09 billion from the international community.
The organization said this amount would be for 4 million out of the 5.9 million people around the country who need humanitarian assistance in the country.
