UN Security Council Authorizes AMISOM’s Redeployment to Somalia

The United Nations Security Council has authorized the redeployment of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

UN Security Council made this decision after the unanimous adoption of Resolution 2520 (2020) as stipulated under the Charter of the United Nations in Chapter VII.

The 15-member UNSC has given AMISOM the authorization to continue maintaining the 19,626 uniformed personnel based in Somalia until February 28, 2021.

The uniformed personnel redeployed in the Horn of Africa nation include 1,040 police officers and five police units.

Furthermore, UNSC also tasked AMISOM to take charge of preparing the country’s security operations ahead of the elections scheduled for the end of this year.

Additionally, AMISOM received the green light to proceed with its war against Al-Shabaab and all other armed militia in the East African nation.
