UN Security Council Renews UNSOM’s Mandate by a Further 12 Months

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) renewed the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) for a further 12 months.

UNSC held its latest session on Tuesday, October 31 to discuss Somalia.

The Security Council met at the UN Headquarters in New York City.

While approving the extension, the UNSC added that UNSOM’s mandate would revolve around supporting the state-building and peacebuilding efforts in Somalia.

On her part, Catriona Laing welcomed the extension.

Laing, in her position as the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), expressed her delight at the latest development.

She thanked the UNSC for the unwavering support extended to the people and government of Somalia.
