The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to convene a private meeting on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, to discuss the situation in Somalia. James Swan, the Special Representative for Somalia and Head of the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), is expected to provide a briefing during this session.
Additionally, representatives from the African Union (AU) will offer updates on the implementation of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in accordance with Resolution 2767, adopted on December 27, 2024.
Resolution 2767 (2024) authorized the establishment of AUSSOM to succeed the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). The mission’s mandate includes supporting the Federal Government of Somalia in degrading Al-Shabaab and affiliates linked to ISIL/Da’esh, prioritizing the protection of civilians, facilitating stabilization and state-building efforts, and creating secure conditions for the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
The upcoming meeting underscores the ongoing collaboration between the UN and the AU, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts among the AU, UN Secretariat, and international stakeholders to enhance peace and stability in Somalia.
