UN, Somalia Hold High-Level Talks on Transition Support, Constitution & Federalism

Mogadishu, Somalia — Key Somali leaders and United Nations officials convened in Mogadishu on Wednesday to push forward the development of Somalia’s federal future, constitutional review, and reconciliation efforts under the ongoing UN transition roadmap.

The consultative workshop, part of the United Nations Transition in Somalia (UNTMIS) Roadmap Development process, brought together senior representatives from the Federal Government of Somalia, including Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

Officials from the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation joined their colleagues from the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and lawmakers from both Houses of Parliament at the workshop.

The session focused on how the UN’s evolving role can continue to support Somalia’s political stabilization during and after the planned transition of the UN presence. Discussions revolved around ensuring that gains made in constitutional review, federalization, and reconciliation are sustained and nationally owned.

UN officials reiterated their commitment to a smooth, Somali-led transition aligned with national priorities, particularly in finalizing the constitution and advancing federal governance structures. Somali stakeholders, in turn, emphasized the importance of continued technical and political support during this critical phase.

The roadmap is expected to guide post-transition cooperation and help shape the future UN engagement in Somalia. Further consultations are planned to ensure inclusive participation and alignment with Somalia’s long-term peacebuilding and state-building agenda.
