UN Special Envoy Discusses Somalia’s Humanitarian Situation with UNHCR Chief

The United Nations Special Representative to Somalia met with the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on October 21 to discuss several issues.

UN Special Representative James Swan and Filippo Grandi, the UNHCR chief, met in Mogadishu.

Some of the issues that featured prominently in their discussions included the current challenges facing internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Somalia.

The number of IDPs has increased exponentially in the recent past.

Factors responsible for the increased number of IDPs include ongoing drought, worsening humanitarian crisis, lack of food and water, and increased conflicts.

Swan and Grandi spoke about ways in which the UN could support the Somali government to protect IDPs around the East African nation.
